Ramakien , From the Ramayana to the National Epic of Thailand PDF Print E-mail

  Ramakien is Thailand's national epic, derived from the Indian Ramayana epic. A number of versions of the epic were lost in the destruction of Ayutthaya in 1767. Three versions currently exist, one of which was prepared in 1797 under the supervision of (and partly written by) King Rama I. His son, Rama II, rewrote some parts of his father's version for Khon drama. The work has had an important influence on Thai literature, art and drama (both the khon and nang dramas being derived from it).

   The name Subanahongsa, or golden hamsa, refers to the swan-like mythical steed of the Hindu god Brahma, which first appeared in Thai lore during the Ayutthaya period. King Rama I ordered the Subanahongsa built soon after his accession to the throne in 1782.

In war and peace, Asian elephants have been a talisman to Thailand for thousands of years. Smaller and gentler than their African counterparts, they were well-suited for carrying kings or cargo. Young elephants were caught wild, trained in camps, and taught to work with people and respond to commands.
